Taylor Swift Endorses Kamala Harris

Taylor Swift, who is one of America’s most celebrated pop-culture icons and has an enormous following across the world, endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris late Tuesday after Ms. Harris’s debate against former President Donald J. Trump.

The endorsement by Ms. Swift, delivered minutes after Ms. Harris and Mr. Trump had stepped off the debate stage in Philadelphia, offers Ms. Harris an unrivaled celebrity backer and a tremendous shot of adrenaline to her campaign, especially with the younger voters she has been trying to attract.

“Like many of you, I watched the debate tonight,” Ms. Swift wrote on Instagram to her 283 million followers. “I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election. I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them."

She signed her post as “Childless Cat Lady,” a reference to comments made by Mr. Trump’s running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, about women without children. The photo that accompanied her post showed her holding a furry feline, Benjamin Button, her pet Ragdoll.

Ms. Swift’s endorsement was much anticipated among Democrats. The singer has expressed regret for not having done more to speak out about her opposition to Mr. Trump during his first run in 2016. Since then, she has embraced a more political posture while speaking out on issues such as abortion access. But the precise timing of Tuesday’s endorsement was something of a surprise: Ms. Swift endorsed Joe Biden on Oct. 7, 2020, closer to the election.

In her post endorsing Ms. Harris, Ms. Swift also referred to her “fears” about artificial intelligence. She pointed to content generated by the technology that had falsely suggested that she supported Mr. Trump, which the former president promoted on social media. She underscored concerns that Americans would not know where she genuinely stood if she had not spoken out.

“It really conjured up my fears around AI, and the dangers of spreading misinformation,” Ms. Swift wrote. “It brought me to the conclusion that I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election as a voter. The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth."

Mr. Trump has called Ms. Swift “liberal” but “beautiful,” and he has praised a friend of hers, Brittany Mahomes, the wife of the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, as well. Some fans of Ms. Swift had encouraged her to go public about her support for Ms. Harris to make a point of contrast after it appeared that Ms. Mahomes had liked one of Mr. Trump’s social media posts.

Kanye West's former chief of staff is taking Ye's dentist to task, claiming the doctor has been supplying Ye with nitrous oxide for recreational use ... but the dentist says the chief made up the allegations for attention.

Milo Yiannopoulos -- Ye's chief of staff for two years before departing the company earlier this year -- submitted an affidavit to the California Dental Board claiming Ye's dentist, Thomas P. Connelly, provided Kanye with nitrous oxide for recreational use.

Yiannopoulos claims Connelly provided the gas for cash ... taking in upwards of $50K every month, even when the gas led to distressing signs from Ye -- including addiction to the substance.

Milo says Ye talked about nitrous oxide nonstop in meetings, appearing in an inhaler mask consistently. His direction to staffers allegedly became incomprehensible and contradictory, and his mood unpredictable.

A Yeezy employee saw Kanye self-administering, according to Milo, and he says it's unclear if anyone was using a regulator. Connelly's firing back, however ... with his spokesperson telling TMZ he's denying all allegations leveled against him by Milo -- calling the narrative "not only factually incorrect but also intentionally misleading."

Spotify Starts Charging Non-Premium Listeners for Lyrics

Now, Spotify is starting to charge for that curiosity, telling some users that they'll have to pay for a subscription plan in order to regularly read lyrics while jamming out.

The streaming giant hasn't made an official announcement, but users across the internet have started posting screenshots from their Spotify accounts informing them of a new monthly limit on accessing song lyrics, effectively making lyrics a paid feature.

"Enjoy lyrics on Spotify Premium," one purported screenshot displayed, as reported by Android Authority. "Every time you tap 'Show lyrics', it will count towards your limit," another posted by Dexerto said.

Spotify's move to push users toward paying for a premium subscription is the latest example of how streaming giants are raising prices and squeezing customers. TV, music and movie streaming companies have been regularly raising prices for the past couple years, while at the same time clamping down on password sharing. Google's YouTube, meanwhile, has also begun cracking down on ad-blocking apps, pointing upset users toward its ad-free $14 per-month subscription.

Unlike other streaming services, Spotify does offer a free tier subsidized by advertising. Free users are limited to shuffled playlists and few skips per hour, effectively creating a tech-industry equivalent of a radio station.

Spotify also reported around $211 million in net profits, following a series of layoffs that cut 2,300 employees from its staff last year.

The CEO of one of the world’s most talked about tech companies has been sacked, rehired, and employed elsewhere in less than a week.

While the precise details remain unclear surrounding the dismissal of Sam Altman, who steered the $90bn (£71.7bn) company behind ChatGPT, what can businesses learn from the tech giant’s mis-footings and failures?

What happened? On the back of the dismissal, an OpenAI blog post said Altman “was not consistently candid in his communications” with the board.

Laura Freebairn-Smith, author of Abundance Leaders believes “the seeds of this disruption might have been sown when the company was founded as a nonprofit.”

A nonprofit board overseeing a “rapidly growing, venture capital-funded for-profit entity” may have created a “dynamic tension between purpose and profit,” according to Freebairn-Smith. Regardless of the finer details, OpenAI’s ongoing saga offers lessons on how not to manage a leadership change.

While clear communication drives company growth, problems arise when investors and staff feel out of the loop. Freebairn-Smith goes on to advise if there are changes in-house, a “thought-out communication plan” is a must. Moving too swiftly, without adequate “digestion time” and “a step-by-step rollout plan,” leads to the kind of chaos we are reading about, she warns.

Powerful leadership has a “strong emphasis on transparency” and developing a “who needs to know what in what sequence?” plan will minimise problems, according to Freebairn-Smith. Whatever happens over the next few weeks, OpenAI is in a worse place now than it was and serves as a cautionary tale to other companies on the brink of organisational change.

Right person, right seat To avoid similar mistakes businesses need to ensure the right people are in the right job.

Sam Altman “wasn’t incompetent,” according to Cliff Ettridge, Director at branding agency The Team, “but he might not have been a CEO. He was an inspirational leader. He was a leader in thinking when it came to AI. That should have been his role and the board missed this.” Ettridge references his workplace in the 1990s – The Body Shop – as a company that got it right.

Anita Roddick was the inspirational leader who drove the ethics, purpose, and invention of the company, but Ettridge points out that she wasn’t in charge of the day to day running of the business. “OpenAI missed the role that Sam Altman could play. Maybe he did too,” says Ettridge. For better business results, the right people must be in the right place.

Manage employee backlash Over 700 ChatGPT employees have signed an open letter threatening to quit unless its board resign. The potential mass exodus of ChatGPT employees underscores the importance of stakeholder engagement in times of change.

When making changes in business, Martin Gutmann PhD, Professor at the Lucerne School of Business, and the author of The Unseen Leader offers advice, saying staff “don’t like to be surprised, especially not when it comes to major organisational changes.”

Acknowledging there are times when things must happen fast, Gutmann maintains that it is crucial to speak to key stakeholders before a major change becomes public: “If investors or key employees hear about a major change through the rumour mill or the newspapers first, they will at best be confused and at worst resentful,” he warns.

Being responsible to different people with varying needs and priorities is challenging. According to Gutmann, there is no magic formula for managing leadership changes correctly, but it helps to “build up credibility and good faith through a track-record of integrity and empathy.”

Remain independent For governance purposes, an autonomous Chair is a must, but David Pattison, Chairman and author of The Money Train notes the Chair was an executive in OpenAI and therefore “unlikely to have an independent view.”

He continues, “How can a non-profit holding company have a for-profit business sitting in it, with the board walking that tightrope of good governance and fair decision-making?

With further details still coming to light, it’s likely that some litigation from the shareholders will follow soon, according to Pattison. While smaller businesses won’t have such complex structures, having an organised line of command is universally advantageous. No matter what size the company, keep investors informed so they don’t hear news about your company on social media or second-hand.

Adding to the chaos, Microsoft, a $13bn (£10.3bn) investor in OpenAI, stood to gain and lose from this leadership transfer. The tech giant has hired OpenAI co-founders Altman and Brockman to head up a “new advanced AI research team” and are “committed to our partnership with OpenAI,” according to Satya Nadella, CEO at Microsoft.

The abrupt leadership changes at OpenAI highlight valuable lessons for businesses navigating organisational shifts.

Managing change in an SME is no small undertaking – but it’s one that (in contrast to big corporations like OpenAI) a business owner is likely to be doing on his or her own, with no experts, no dedicated departments, and no funds for outside consultants.

Transparent communication, strategic foresight and thoughtful execution are indispensable in steering organisations of any size through the complex currents of change.

Binance Founder Changpeng Zhao Steps Down, Pleads Guilty | Binance to pay billions in US in money laundering case, CEO resigns

Binance chief executive Changpeng Zhao pleaded guilty Tuesday to US money laundering charges, in a deal that will see the cryptocurrency exchange he founded pay over $4 billion in penalties.

"Binance became the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange in part because of the crimes it committed –- now it is paying one of the largest corporate penalties in US history," Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement.

Binance's guilty plea is part of coordinated action including with the Treasury Department's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network and Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), the Department of Justice said. Zhao pleaded guilty to failing to maintain an effective anti-money laundering program, the Department of Justice said, and he has resigned from his position of CEO.

Zhao, who lives abroad, entered his plea in person in the United States, added Garland. Binance's agreements with the Treasury Department's agencies include a civil money penalty of $3.4 billion and a $968 million penalty involving OFAC. These mark the agencies' largest settlements in history.

"Binance turned a blind eye to its legal obligations in the pursuit of profit," Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in a statement. "Its willful failures allowed money to flow to terrorists, cybercriminals and child abusers through its platform." She noted Binance "deliberately undermined its own sanctions monitoring controls," allowing over 1.5 million virtual currency trades violating US sanctions, and failed to report suspicious transactions. "This will advance our criminal investigations into malicious cyber activity and terrorism fundraising, including the use of cryptocurrency exchanges to support groups such as Hamas," he added.

Binance was created in 2017 and cornered much of the crypto-trading market, turning Zhao into a billionaire. Binance runs crypto exchanges and provides other services across the world, but it has taken a severe hit since crypto markets collapsed and regulators began probing the legality of its business. Zhao -- often seen as the arch-rival of disgraced FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried -- is expected to face sentencing at a later time. SEC to compel Elon Musk’s testimony in Twitter stock purchase probe

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission will try to force Elon Musk to testify over his Twitter stock purchases. The federal agency charged with regulating securities markets is currently investigating Musk for allegedly violating securities laws when he bought Twitter shares before buying the social media platform, which he has since renamed X.

Buying Twitter stock before acquiring the company could mean Musk was guilty of insider trading, market manipulation or even violation for fair market disclosure.

The SEC said on Thursday that Musk failed to appear to testify last month as requested. According to a filing by the agency in federal court in San Francisco, first spotted by Bloomberg, the agency is auditing Musk’s statements and disclosures about the stock transactions.

Since the SEC began its probe in April 2022, Musk has sent hundreds of documents and testified twice in July 2022, according to the filing. The investigation is ongoing and nonpublic.

The agency said Musk agreed to an interview with the SEC last month in San Francisco, but two days before the scheduled September 15 meeting, the billionaire raised objections, saying San Francisco wasn’t a good location for it. He has claimed that San Francisco jurors dislike him after a questionnaire sent out to 200 prospective jurors came back with majority negative opinions of Musk.

The SEC suggested moving the interview to Fort Worth, Texas, where Musk resides, but the agency says he refused to meet at all.

This isn’t Musk’s first tussle with the SEC. Famously, the Tesla CEO has been ordered to have a lawyer review his Tesla-related tweets after Musk tweeted in 2018 that he had “funding secured” to take Tesla private for $420 per share and that investor support for the deal was confirmed. Tesla’s share price fluctuated in the weeks that followed, which prompted an SEC investigation into whether Musk had committed securities fraud.

The SEC is also investigating Musk and Tesla over their claims regarding Tesla vehicles’ “full self-driving” capabilities, as well as Tesla’s use of company funds to build Musk a “glass house.“

The highly anticipated criminal trial for Sam Bankman-Fried, former CEO of bankrupt crypto exchange FTX, started Tuesday to determine whether he’s guilty of seven counts of fraud and conspiracy. And as one former federal prosecutor put it: “The odds seem to be stacked against him at this point.” The 31-year-old co-founded FTX in 2019; within a few years the once third-largest crypto exchange’s valuation hit $32 billion at its peak. It’s now trying to claw back any funds to distribute to creditors. But how did the once third-largest crypto exchange get here? Before FTX, Bankman-Fried co-founded crypto-trading firm Alameda Research in 2017. He co-founded FTX in 2019 as a complement to Alameda, to help bring in revenue and liquidity for the trading arm. Within two years, more than 80 investors provided about $2 billion in capital to FTX, helping Bankman-Fried propel his vision into a reality. In January 2022, the company raised $400 million in a Series C round, boosting its valuation to $32 billion. That was its last round of public funding. The company gained somewhat mainstream recognition with branding deals and partnerships. For example, in 2021 it bought the naming rights for the Miami Heat’s home arena. FTX also got its name branded on Major League Baseball umpires’ polos, and it partnered with celebrities like Tom Brady and his ex-wife, Gisele Bündchen, as well as Steph Curry, Shaquille O’Neal and Naomi Osaka, among others. He also had close ties to U.S. regulators and government officials, many of whom he donated to.

FTX’s collapse

Concerns surrounding FTX’s liquidity grew after CoinDesk published a copy of Alameda’s balance sheet, showing the firm held $14.6 billion in assets and $8 billion in liabilities as of June 30, 2022. But there was a problem: The report showed Alameda’s largest asset was $3.66 billion of “unlocked FTT” and $2.16 billion of “FTT collateral.” FTT was the token behind FTX. The balance sheet showed that the $5.82 billion in FTT tokens that Alameda owned was 193% higher than the total FTT market cap, which was about $3 billion at the time. That means it purported to have more FTT tokens on its balance sheet than what existed in the world. Around the same time it was exposed, the world’s largest crypto exchange, Binance, started pulling out its remaining $2.1 billion equivalent of cash in BUSD and FTT. (It had an equity position in FTX from 2019 to 2021.) This essentially triggered a bank run on FTX. FTX and Alameda filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the U.S. mid-November 2022. Bankman-Fried resigned, and John J. Ray III, the Enron turnaround veteran, was appointed its new CEO. Bankman-Fried, however, maintained his innocence. At The New York Times’ DealBook Summit, he appeared virtually from the Bahamas, saying “I didn’t ever try to commit fraud on anyone; I was shocked by what happened this month.” In a published DM exchange with a Vox reporter, he said he regretted filing for bankruptcy and thought that “regulators make everything worse.”

SBF arrested

Bankman-Fried was arrested in December 2022 in the Bahamas, where FTX was based. He was then extradited to the U.S. to face a number of criminal charges. He was released on a $250 million bail bond, and he remained under house arrest at his parents’ home in Palo Alto. This was revoked in August after he was accused of intimidating Alameda’s former CEO, Caroline Ellison, by leaking her private diary. Ray represented the company during a House Financial Services Committee hearing regarding FTX. When asked whether the firm had significant risk management systems, Ray said at the time that “there were virtually no internal controls and no separateness whatsoever” and added that he did not “trust a single piece of paper” in the exchange’s organization. U.S. Attorney Damian Williams called Bankman-Fried’s alleged crimes “one of the biggest financial frauds in American history,” in a press conference.

FTX co-founder and former CTO Gary Wang, and Alameda Research’s former CEO, Caroline Ellison, both pleaded guilty in December 2022 to federal criminal charges in relation to the FTX collapse. They’re also facing civil penalties from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) alongside the criminal charges. Wang and Ellison plan to cooperate with prosecutors and will be major witnesses in the trial, given their close ties to Bankman-Fried, FTX and Alameda. In January, Bankman-Fried pleaded not guilty to all counts, which include wire fraud, conspiracy to commit money laundering and conspiracy to misuse customer funds. He could face up to 115 years in jail if convicted on all charges. The crypto industry as a whole suffered from FTX’s collapse, which was the first of many. BlockFi filed for Chapter 11 in November 2022, as did Genesis Global Trading in January.

In Swift’s second NFL appearance to show some support for her rumored new boo — Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce — she was joined by A Simple Favor actress Blake Lively, Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds and Academy Award nominee and Tony winner Hugh Jackman in a suite. The Wolverine star — who made his Billboard Hot 100 debut with “The Greatest Show” from his 2017 film The Greatest Showman — shared a cute selfie of the four megastars to his Instagram Stories early Monday morning (Oct. 2), simply tagging his three fellow attendees. In the snap, the four are gathered close and smiling — though Swift has an “oh!” expression on her face — with the field below them in the background.


Other stars spotted with Swift in the suite as she cheered on Kelce to the Chiefs’ 23-20 victory over the Jets included Sophie Turner, who is in the midst of a divorce from Joe Jonas, and Brittany Mahomes, who is married to Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The pop superstar was also spotted hugging Sabrina Carpenter as she entered the stadium. The week before, on Sept. 24, the “August” singer rooted on Kelce alongside his mother, Donna, as the Chiefs annihilated the Chicago Bears 41-10. The rumored pair left Arrowhead Stadium together in the NFL star’s convertible after the game.
